GRANDVIEW VETERINARY CLINIC

GIVE THEM SOMETHING TO SMILE ABOUT

Can you imagine what your teeth would be like if you never went to your dentist for a routine cleaning? What if you never brushed them either? Sadly, this is the case for many pets. As responsible pet owners we have to remember that our pets have teeth too.

At Grandview Veterinary Clinic we offer complete dental care to your cats and dogs. We offer services that start from oral examinations, dental cleanings and disease treatment, to brushing instruction, products, and special foods and treats.

Dr. Myers would like to invite you to schedule your pet for an oral examination today. She will be able to diagnose any dental treatment your pet may require. GVC carries products designed specifically for your dog or cat. Products like toothbrushes that are angled to reach areas that a human brush was not designed to reach. Toothpaste in flavors your pet will enjoy and is safe to swallow. We also offer beneficial foods and treats designed to prevent the accumulation of tartar. Our knowledgeable staff will be happy to instruct you on how to correctly use these products.

According to AVDS, 80% of dogs and 70% of cats show signs of oral disease by age 3. This is an important fact to keep in mind. Periodontal Disease is very common in cats and dogs, particularly in small breeds. Cats also can develop painful lesions along the gum line. Twenty-eight percent of domestic cats will develop at least one in their lifetime.

When tartar is not removed from teeth infection will begin to appear along the gum line and separate teeth from the gums. Without proper treatment this may lead to tooth loss. In the beginning, periodontal disease is painless. Due to this we would like to remind you if you wait until your pet shows signs of a problem, just like your oral health, it may require long-term and expensive treatment to correct.

Periodontal disease is not limited to effecting only teeth and gums. If left untreated, infection may enter the bloodstream potentially infecting the heart, liver and kidneys. Also like humans, pets can develop cavities. To avoid this feed only pet food and treats. These do not contain decay causing sugars. Preventative care is the key.

You are also encouraged to watch out for warning signs such as bad breath, change in your pets eating or chewing habits, pawing at face or mouth and depression. These are all signs of periodontal disease.

Bad breath is not natural. It may indicate a more serious problem or is caused by plaque or tartar on teeth. In either case a visit to GVC will be able to help. If a dental cleaning is recommended,    both the doctor and her staff are highly experienced with this procedure.

Because your pet will need to stay perfectly still to insure a thorough cleaning, general anesthesia will be required. To ease your mind, monitoring, pre surgical testing, and close supervision increase a safe experience.

Remember, oral disease is preventable. Let us help you provide your pet with the best care both of you deserve.
